Dr Mathew Sebastian

FRCSEd, MMed (Surg), FRACS (Vascular)
Dr Mathew Sebastian is a vascular surgeon with over a decade of experience and expertise, now providing service to the Newcastle and Hunter Region of New South Wales.
He graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1990. He completed both his Basic as well as Advanced Specialty Training in General Surgery in Singapore, primarily at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He was the Yahya Cohen Gold Medallist in Surgery for the Master of Medicine (Surgery) examinations in 1994. After exit certification in General Surgery in 1999, he trained in Vascular Surgery in SGH for a year before doing an ACGME-accredited Vascular Surgical Fellowship at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA from July 2000-Dec 2001.
Aside from the full range of vascular surgical procedures expected of a graduate of an accredited program, he also received specific training in Endovascular (ie catheter-wire based) Therapy in particular aortic stent-grafting for aneurysmal disease as well as lower extremity and renal interventions.
After working as a vascular surgeon in Singapore from 2002 to 2009, Mathew made the big decision to emigrate to Australia, looking for a more balanced life for his family. His time in Singapore included being Sub-specialty Chief for Vascular Surgery as well as Director of the non-invasive vascular ultrasound lab in SGH.
He held academic appointments in two medical schools in Singapore and was Adjunct Associate Professor on the faculty of the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore until the end of 2012. On completion of his period of practice oversight here in Australia, he obtained his FRACS (Vascular Surgery) in January 2011.
Mathew has a public appointment as Staff Specialist Vascular Surgeon at the John Hunter Hospital and also consults in his private rooms at Vascular HealthCare in Gateshead as well as in East Maitland.
