Chris O’Neill is a general surgeon with a subspecialty practice in endocrine and breast surgery. After obtaining her medical degree at the University of Melbourne in 2000, she undertook general surgical training in the Hunter. She then completed a two-year fellowship with the University of Sydney Endocrine surgical unit during which she obtained a Masters of Surgery in the molecular genetics of thyroid cancer.
In 2010 she returned to Newcastle and has appointments at John Hunter, Belmont and Lake Macquarie Private Hospitals.
She has a particular interest in thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery and performs minimally invasive surgery where appropriate. She manages both benign and malignant breast disease and incorporates oncoplastic breast surgical techniques. She has a certificate in clinician performed ultrasound and uses ultrasound at the bedside and in the operating theatre.
She has authored more than 20 scientific peer-reviewed papers and is a reviewer for a number of international journals. She continues to pursue research interests and is involved in medical student teaching and post-graduate training, being the supervisor of general surgical training in the Hunter.
