Dr Stuart Sugito

Dr Stuart Sugito is a cardiologist with sub-specialty expertise in multi-modality Cardiac Imaging (echocardiography and cardiac CT). Dr Sugito consults on all aspects of cardiology, including coronary artery disease, heart failure and atrial fibrillation. He has a interests in structural and valvular heart disease, inherited cardiac conditions and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Dr Sugito graduated from the University of New England/University of Newcastle Joint Medical Program in 2014 and completed a Master of Public Health from the University of Newcastle in 2020. He obtained his FRACP in 2020 after completing basic physician training and advanced training in Cardiology at the John Hunter Hospital. He then moved to Melbourne to complete a non-invasive cardiac imaging fellowship at Monash Heart. This included dedicated training on advanced echocardiography techniques such as contrast and 3-D echocardiography, stress echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography (including peri-procedural
TOE for percutaneous structural interventions such as MitraClip, left atrial appendage closure device implantation, and PFO/ASD closure), and advanced cardiac CT interpretation. Dr Sugito is a level B CTCA accredited specialist.

Dr Sugito is a conjoint lecturer at the University of Newcastle and has public hospital appointments at The Maitland and John Hunter Hospitals, where he supervises and teaches undergraduate medical students and post-graduate junior doctors. He is an active researcher and has contributed to many cardiovascular research projects, collaborating on local, national and international studies, ranging from basic science investigations to multi-centre pharmacological clinical trials.

Dr Sugito enjoys contributing to GP education. The main topics that he covers are;
1. Cardiovascular disease risk assessment and prevention (including use of Coronary Artery Calcium score)
2. Non-invasive assessment of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) – CTCA, stress echo, exercise stress test, myocardial perfusion study
3. Guideline based Heart Failure management
4. Assessment and timing of intervention in Valvular Heart Disease

• General cardiology consultations at Newcastle Heart (Hamilton and East Maitland consulting suites).
– Including assessment and management of undifferentiated chest pain and/or dyspnoea, coronary artery disease, heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
– Special interest in valvular heart disease, inherited cardiac conditions, cardiovascular disease prevention and perioperative cardiac risk assessment.
