Associate Professor Aaron Sverdlov

Aaron Sverdlov is a cardiologist with interests in heart failure and cardio-oncology (cardiovascular complications of cancer therapies).

He is an Associate Professor and Director of Heart Failure at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute.

Aaron is also a Clinical Lead for Heart Failure Service for Hunter New England Local Health District and a Cardiologist at the John Hunter Hospital.

Aaron received his medical degree from the University of Adelaide in 2000 and then completed post-graduate training in cardiology, including serving as a Chief Medical Resident for 2 years.

He was admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in December 2007.

He was then appointed staff specialist in cardiology at the Queen Elizabeth and Lyell McEwin Hospitals from February 2008 and held this appointment until moving to Newcastle in 2017 to become an Inaugural Director of Heart Failure.

In 2012 Aaron was awarded his PhD in aortic valve disease from the University of Adelaide.

He was then awarded an NHMRC CJ Martin and RACP Fellowships to undertake postdoctoral work with Prof Wilson Colucci at Boston University (2012-15).

At Boston University he studied mechanisms of heart failure, especially secondary to obesity and role of novel biomarkers in heart disease. There he was awarded a prestigious American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship.

In the US, Aaron also developed a strong interest in cardiovascular complications of cancer therapies (cardio-oncology). After his return to Australia in 2015, Aaron established a first in South Australia, a cardio-oncology clinic.

His clinical and research leadership has been recognized by the award of highly prestigious National Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellowship and a 2018 Ministerial Award for Rising Stars in cardiovascular research.

This was the first time this was awarded outside a Sydney based institution). In Newcastle, Aaron has established a first in Australia, clinical and research Cancer and the Heart Program aimed at improving outcomes of cancer patients and survivors.

Aaron has 60 peer-reviewed publications and over 80 presentations at major national and international conferences.

He co-leads a large research group across the University of Newcastle, Hunter Medical Research Institute and HNE Health encompassing basic, translational and clinical research and has received over AUD $3 million in competitive research funding.

Aaron has a public appointment at the John Hunter Hospital, runs an outpatient cardio-oncology clinic at the Calvary Mater Newcastle and has recently joined Newcastle Heart in May 2019.
